Netflix, Disney Plus and Amazon Prime Video running on TV screens for our best streaming services 2022 article.
Who comes out on top in the battle of the best streaming services? (Image credit: Future)

The best streaming service isn't a one-size-fits-all type of choice anymore. There are hundreds of niche services to choose from nowadays, which means you can find a streamer that's dedicated to showcasing a very specific type of content, from arthouse films and documentaries to horror and sports, and more – and not all are subscription-based either, with the rise of free ad-supported streaming TV (FAST).

In this guide, instead of recommending the single best streaming service, we've focused on the six biggest streaming services by global subscription numbers – Disney Plus and Hulu, which we're recommending as a bundled subscription, Apple TV Plus, Max, Netflix, Paramount Plus and Prime Video – to help you choose which one to sign up to this month. Why this month? Because each offers a very mixed library of movies and shows that changes from month-to-month.

Each streamer is constantly adding and removing content as well as announcing new subscription changes, which can range from more ads and price hikes to password crackdowns and UI updates, so we've opted to evaluate each service's offerings on a monthly basis to help you decide whether it's worth keeping your subscription or canceling it for another.

You love blockbuster franchises: With three familiar movie franchises coming to Netflix in July, there’s plenty to enjoy for Back to the Future, Spider-Man, and Bad Boys fans.

You missed two of TV’s biggest shows: The cult classic mystery show Lost that had everyone on tenterhooks in 2004 is now available, along with the final season of Suits, letting you binge watch the full series.

Your favorite type of movies are thrillers: Netflix’s existing library is rock solid, just look at these five thrillers with over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, but there’s also Captain Phillips and The Man from U.N.C.L.E. being added this month.

Reasons to switch this month

You don’t like rom-coms: A Family Affair is seeing dismal reviews, and while there are three better rom-coms to stream with over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, Prime Video’s The Idea of You is rated higher and is a better option for romance.

You’d rather skip hyped action movies: Trigger Warning, which also prompted us to recommend three better action flicks with over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes, is another flop. If you want action movies, check out Max.

You’re looking for a scare: While horror movies like American Psycho, Annabelle and Jigsaw have been added this month, you can find more varied selections elsewhere, such as the Saw movies on Disney Plus.

What's new this month?

If you’re considering signing up this month, then you’ll find 39 shows and 55 movies in everything new on Netflix July 2024, which is an increase from the 28 TV shows added in June but it’s also less than the 69 flicks dropped as part of everything new on Netflix in June 2024. Alongside classic family comedies like Uncle Buck and Matilda, you’ll find plenty more Netflix Originals this month too, including Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Cobra Kai season six, The Boyfriend, and more, so if you’re excited to catch these, then it might be worth the $6.99 for this month.

Is Netflix worth subscribing to?

If you’re looking to catch new seasons from hit shows like Bridgerton and Cobra Kai, then July could be a great time to sign-up. But it’s worth keeping in mind that Emily in Paris and The Umbrella Academy will return in August. While there weren't many titles leaving Netflix in July 2024, there are five movies with over 90% on Rotten Tomatoes set to see the boot, alongside a couple of recent cancellations, including a hit animation show with a 100% Rotten Tomatoes score, and a new fantasy series from the producers of Dark, so it might be worth holding out for a potential free ad-supported Netflix but who knows when that will arrive.

You love cult classics: Cult classic movie fans are in for a treat this month as the likes of Gladiator, Taxi Driver, and No Country for Old Men are all coming to Prime Video in July.

You love period dramas: If you’ve already watched My Lady Jane, you can also check out three more highly-rated period dramas on Prime Video to stream next to keep the adventure going.

You missed some of TV’s biggest shows: The critically acclaimed show The Boys season four is out now, as well as hugely popular series The Rings of Power, Fallout, and Reacher if you haven’t watched those already.

Reasons to switch this month

You want some sci-fi action: While Prime Video canceled hit sci-fi series Outer Range, Netflix’s dark superhero series Supacell has 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and would be a great alternative.

You’d rather miss out on being scared: Prime Video is home to an array of horror movies and TV shows, including Nanny, which has 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. But if you don’t fancy a scare, then Disney Plus is an ideal choice.

You want quality over quantity: Although Prime Video has some stellar original content, it also has a lot of lower quality movies and TV shows. If you want high-caliber content, then Apple TV Plus is the way to go.

What's new this month?

Prime Video is bringing an array of new titles to the streaming service in July 2024, with over 130 new movies landing on the platform on July 1 alone, which is more than the 120 movies that were added as part of everything new on Prime Video in June on the first day. While the hugely popular series The Boys season four is now available to stream, there’s plenty of more Amazon Originals to enjoy with The Marvelous Mrs Maisel, The Tomorrow War, and The Summer I Turned Pretty. From classic flicks to cinematic releases, there’s a diverse range of highly rated movies constantly being added to the service every month, just check out our three movies new to Prime Video with 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes and five movies new to Prime Video with 88% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes. So if you’re eager to catch these then it might be worth the $8.99 for this month.

Is Prime Video worth subscribing to?

If you want to catch new episodes from hit shows like The Boys, My Lady Jane and Those About to Die, then July is the month to subscribe to Prime Video. However, there’s also more exciting projects in the works at Amazon Studios to expand its TV content, including an animated cat comedy called Kevin, a prequel Legally Blonde series, a live-action Spider-Man Noir series, Mr and Mrs Smith season two and more. Of course, we also have The Rings of Power season two to look forward to in August, which might be a better time.

You love the Alien movie franchise: Hulu is adding Alien: Covenant, Aliens, and Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem to its library if you’re in the mood for some sci-fi greats this month. It might ease the pain considering Prime Video cancelled a great sci-fi show recently.

Reasons to switch this month

You want fantasy shows: Disney and Hulu aren't the best places for fantasy in July. Instead, Max is streaming episodes of House of the Dragon season two, while Prime Video is gearing up for season two of The Rings of Power in August.

You’re in the mood for iconic movies: Prime Video has the best offering of big movies including Breakfast at Tiffany’s, Lawrence Of Arabia, and Trainspotting. Check out everything that’s coming to Prime Video in July 2024 for more titles.

Comedies seem to be a big focus for Disney Plus and Hulu this month, with movies like Step Brothers, Super Troopers and Sex Tape all joining the library. So if you’re in need of a laugh, you might want to hang on to both subscriptions. There’s a big focus on game shows too as US audiences can catch the Who Wants to Be a Millionaire season 23 premiere as well as the season 10 debut of Celebrity Family Feud, alongside a Decades of Laughs special for the original Family Feud. If you love Disney Parks and want to get an inside look into them, EPCOT Becoming: Inside the Transformation focuses on the Florida park, giving us a behind-the-scenes peek at EPCOT’s recent makeover. There’s bad news for movie fans though as five Wes Anderson movies have been kicked off the streamer.

Is Disney Plus and Hulu worth subscribing to?

In July, Hulu and Disney Plus’ main focus appears to be Star Wars and comedy, so if these categories interest you, it’s certainly worth sticking around to get your money’s worth. The Bear is one of the major FX programs nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series at the 2024 Emmys and has attracted large viewership figures alongside Star Wars: The Acolyte and Shōgun – if you're after similar shows, here are three more series to keep the adventure going. Over on Hulu, historical and musical dramas are coming to the platform as part of a batch of new movies and shows, including Bohemian Rhapsody, Ford v Ferrari, and The Monk and the Gun – check out everything new on Hulu in July 2024 for the full list. We've also spotted five thriller movies with over 92% on Rotten Tomatoes coming to the service this month, alongside the return of originals like The Serpent Queen, and these three similar shows with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Your favorite movie is one made by A24: The indie powerhouse has a deal with Max to stream all of its new movies exclusively for a limited time, which means that its queer slasher Love Lies Bleeding landed on the platform on July 19.

You adore Elizabeth Taylor: Among the mammoth list of new movies being added to Max in July are three classics from Hollywood's golden age with the arrivals of Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958), Cleopatra (1963), and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? (1966).

You love thrillers: If you like David Fincher classics, M Night Shyamalan mysteries and director Rose Glass, who made her movie debut in 2019 with psychological horror Saint Maud, then these five new nail-biting movies on Max with over 75% on Rotten Tomatoes are for you.

Reasons to switch this month

You don't like superhero animations, surrealist comedies and fantasy epics: If those don't sound like your cup of tea then these three new shows on Max with 90% or higher on Rotten Tomatoes definitely won't be.

You don't like horror movies: With the full Saw movie collection arriving on Max in July, you might want to give it a skip as that will mean you miss out on watching almost 10 movies on the platform – if you're about getting your absolute money's worth.

You're not a Game of Thrones fan: It'll be all dragons in July on Max with the return of House of the Dragon season two. As we said in our review, it's "a bloody and blazingly brilliant return to form", making it well worth a watch.

You’re a horror fan: The streamer lacks when it comes to horror content. We’d suggest looking elsewhere in July. As one example, you can watch the Saw movies on Disney Plus.

You love anime: While there’s a selection of animation movies and TV shows to enjoy on Apple TV Plus, with the most recent addition being WondLa, Netflix is ideal for some of the best anime.

You’re a hopeless romantic: Apple TV Plus isn’t a trailblazer when it comes to romance, but Prime Video’s The Idea of You and The Summer I Turned Pretty are great alternatives.

What's new this month?

July is a good month for new Paramount Plus Originals coming to the platform, with the drama Memory, cartoon series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, reality shows Big Brother and RuPaul's Drag Race, and two new docuseries – I'm not Broken and Mafia Spies – premiering throughout the month. However, there's also been a lot of change at the service. From announcing an incoming price hike to finally agreeing to merge with long-time partner Skydance, the company is set to embark on a new chapter that will likely mean some changes to its streaming service.

Is Paramount Plus worth subscribing to?

Paramount Plus doesn't switch up its library as often as rivals but it's still adding new movies and shows each month, and July is no different with a new original called Memory, alongside series Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years, Big Brother, RuPaul's Drag Race, and two new docuseries – I'm not Broken and Mafia Spies. If these are enough to draw you in then you won't be disappointed as it's also adding a load of great classics, including these four movies with over 86% on Rotten Tomatoes and five shows with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes.
